Anyone can hang drywall. The taping stage is where the skill shows. Proper taping — paper tape embedded in mud, not mesh tape — creates a joint that won't crack, won't telegraph, and won't fail under paint sheen.

LR Contracting runs three full coats on every project: embedding coat, fill coat, and finish coat. Each coat gets mandatory drying time before the next goes on. No rushing, no shortcuts. Wet compound that gets coated over will crack. We've fixed too many jobs where the previous contractor rushed the drying stage.

Final sanding is done under consistent lighting to catch any imperfections. We do not prime-and-reveal problems for the painter. We fix them before we leave.

Our Taping Process

Paper Tape — Always

We use paper tape, not mesh. Paper tape embedded in compound creates a stronger, flatter joint. Mesh tape is faster but produces inferior results and is more prone to cracking on wider joints.

Mandatory Drying Time

Each coat must be fully dry before the next goes on. In winter we use supplemental heat to control conditions. We never apply a coat over wet compound — this is the most common cause of cracking and failure.

Three Full Coats

Embedding coat, fill coat, finish coat. Each has a different consistency and purpose. We don't combine coats or skip stages to save time. The three-coat process exists for good reasons.

Sanding Under Light

Final sanding is done with consistent raking light to reveal any flats, ridges or tool marks before the painter arrives. What you can't see under construction lighting will show under gloss paint.

Corner Bead Finishing

Every outside corner bead finished flat and straight. Inside corners hand-finished for a clean, tight line. Corner transitions that painters can work against without shimming or filling.

Smooth Finish Standard

Our standard finish is smooth and paint-ready. We also do sand texture, orange peel, knockdown and other textures on request. The finish type gets confirmed before we start the job.

What's the difference between taping and finishing?

Taping refers to the embedding coat where paper tape is applied over all joints and corners. Finishing refers to the subsequent coats of compound that feather out the joints and create a smooth, flat surface. Both are part of our standard scope.

Do you do the boarding and taping together?

Yes — most of our projects include full scope from boarding through to final coat. We can also do taping-only if the boarding has already been completed by someone else. We'll assess the boarding quality before quoting.

What finish do you recommend for custom homes?

Smooth finish. Under any paint with sheen — eggshell, satin, semi-gloss — texture will telegraph. Under pot lighting or natural raking light, texture shows. Smooth finish is the correct choice for custom homes.

How long does taping take?

For a typical custom home, the full taping process takes 6–10 working days including drying time between coats. Rushing this stage causes cracking and failures. We give you a realistic timeline upfront.

How do I know when the walls are ready to paint?

We do a final walkthrough before we leave. If anything doesn't pass our check, we address it before you see it. Your painter should be receiving walls that are fully sanded and ready — not walls that need further work.

Can you match existing texture on a renovation?

Usually yes. We can match most common textures including orange peel, knockdown, and sand finish. We'll review the existing texture before starting to confirm we can achieve a match.
