The Phases That Make Up the Drywall Timeline
- Board hanging — physically cutting and screwing drywall panels to framing
- First coat taping — embedding tape and first compound coat on all joints
- Drying time — 24 hours minimum per coat; more in cold or humid conditions
- Second coat — fill coat, feathered wider than first
- Third coat — finish coat, feathered to full width
- Sanding — between each coat and after final coat
- Level 5 skim (if specified) — full surface skim coat plus final sanding pass
Even the most experienced crew in Oakville cannot rush drying time. Joint compound that is not fully dry will shrink, crack, and cause failures that appear months later under paint. Other trades. Drywall cannot start until rough electrical, plumbing, HVAC and insulation are complete and inspected. What Adds Time to the Schedule
- Cold weather: Below 13°C, joint compound will not cure properly. In winter builds, the space must be heated before and during taping.

- Complex ceilings: Coffered ceilings, curved walls and multi-level tray ceilings add 30–50% to taping time compared to flat standard ceilings.
- Level 5 finish: Add 2–4 working days to any timeline for Level 5 versus Level 4. The skim coat and final sanding are significant additional steps.
